Starrett Memorial United Methodist Church is having a party to celebrate Fat Tuesday on Feb. 25 at 6:30 p.m.

Also known as Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras, Carnival and Pancake Day, Fat Tuesday is a joyous celebration that takes place the day before Ash Wednesday, to mark the start of the Christian fasting season of Lent.

This year, the church at 40 Island St. is hosting its third annual Fat Tuesday Celebration. Friends, family, neighbors — the entire community is invited to this free party. Fellowship Hall, located in the church basement, will be decorated in the traditional Mardi Gras colors of purple, gold and green. And, of course, there will be plenty of beads.

Local musicians Steve Babineau and friends will provide music bringing lively jazz sounds to downtown Athol. There will be room for dancing and light refreshments will be served. Masks and costumes are welcome, but not necessary. The event is free, family friendly and open to the community.

“Last year we had a wonderful time and we are looking forward to an evening of great music and fun with old friends and hopefully some new ones — come join us,” Pastor Mary Owen said.

The party is drug- and alcohol-free.

RSVP by calling 978-249-6677 or on the church’s Fat Tuesday Party event page on Facebook @StarrettMemorialUMC. The church is accessible and parking is available in the lot behind the church, the library parking lot or on Island and Marble Street.
