Robert Joseph Carney, 90, died in Falmouth Hospital on December 9, 2018, of pneumonia as a complication of lung cancer. In the days and hours before his death, he welcomed family to his bedside for laughter and conversations that were as warm and remarkable as they were bittersweet.

Born in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1928, Bob was the son of Martin and Mary (Carrigan) Carney. He attended Worcester schools and Boston University. He joined the U.S. Army in 1946, serving in the Philippines and on Guam.

In 1956, Bob joined the Sales Department at the L.S. Starrett Company, headquartered in Athol, Massachusetts, retiring as General Sales Manager in 1990. Over the course of a career he loved and excelled at, Bob lived and worked in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Toronto, and Chicago, traveling across North America regularly for work and leisure, always intrigued by the people and places he encountered. He was a master story-teller whose delight in wry humor was contagious.

Bob reveled in his twenty-eight year retirement on Cape Cod, fulfilling a long-held passion to learn to sail and captaining his sailboat, the At Last. He became an avid gardener and, importantly, never lost his gifts for conversation and friendship.

He leaves his beloved wife of 65 years, Patricia, of Falmouth; adored children Debra, Susan, and Robert Carney, and children-in-law George Owens and Wanda Willard; and precious granddaughter Emma Carney. He is also survived by his cherished sister Mary McArdle of Worcester and nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.

A family memorial gathering will be held in the New Year. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Bob's life may make a donation to LUNGevity ( or to the research conducted by Dr. Alice Tsang Shaw at Massachusetts General Hospital (
