Local Roundup: Big fourth quarter lifts Mahar girls basketball past Easthampton

It was a fourth quarter to remember for the Mahar girls basketball team on Monday against Easthampton. 

The Sens trailed 31-24 heading into the final eight minutes of the Franklin County League North contest, but Mahar saved its best for last. 

It was Nevaeh Scriber and Irati Martinez who pulled the Sens back in the game, Scribner knocking down a trio of 3’s while Irati scored six points in the quarter on three field goals. All the while, the Mahar defense held the Eagles to just six points, helping the Senators pull off a 39-37 comeback victory in Orange. 

Scribner led the way with 16 points in the win while Martinez tossed in 12 points. Hayden Comeau tallied six points, Taylor Paluk knocked down a 3 while Alivia Patch added two points for Mahar. 

Frontier 59, Hopkins 9 — The Redhawks raced out to a 36-5 halftime lead, paving the way to a Franklin County League North win at Goodnow Gymnasium on Monday. 

Harper Modestow finished with 10 points, Jazzy Hayes tallied nine points, Skyler Steele, Claire Kirkendall and Olivia Machon each recorded eight points while Ashley Taylor scored seven points in the victory for Frontier. 

Cora White led Hopkins with three points. 

Pioneer 63, Ware 30 — The Panthers had four players finish in double figures — led by Kyler McClelland with 13 points — to pull away with a Franklin County League South win at Messer Gymnasium on Monday.

Addie Harrington and Hailey Ring both recorded 12 points while Leah Potter tallied 11 points in the win. Natalie Rios scored nine points while Fota N’Diaye added six points for Pioneer. 

Franklin Tech 54, Athol 29 — Hannah Gilbert’s 13 points and four steals helped power the Eagles past the Bears at Mallet Gymnasium on Monday in a Franklin County League South contest. 

Kyra Goodell scored nine points, Haleigh Benoit tallied seven points and eight rebounds, Cordelia Guerin finished with six points while Lea Chapman scored four points and pulled down nine rebounds for Franklin Tech.

The Franklin Tech wrestling team hosted the Eagle Duals on Saturday in Turners, going 3-1 on the day. 

Carsten Couture (120), Jacob Martin (157), Jackson Morey (165), Collin Eddy (190) and Seamus Collins (215) picked up victories for the Eagles in a tie against Keene. Against the Purple Knights Couture, Landon Purington (132), Martin, Izaya Romer (175), Eddy and Dillon Laffond (285) secured victories to lead Tech to a team win. 

Middlebury, Vt. handed Tech its lone loss of the day, though Purington and Eddy had individual wins in the match. In the win over the Pacers Eddy and Laffond walked away with victories for the Eagles. 

East Longmeadow 49, Frontier 21 — Ber Calh oun (106), Konnor James (150) and Javion Cabrera (285) had individual wins for the Redhawks in a loss to the Spartans on Saturday. 

Deerfield results

The Deerfield Academy girls hockey team made it 11 wins in a row on Saturday with a 2-0 triumph over Taft. 

Here are the remainder of the DA results from Saturday: boys hockey lost to   Choate (2-1), boys squash beat  Tabor (4-3) and St. George’s (6-1), boys basketball defeated Phillips Andover (72-66), boys swimming beat Choate (104.5-79.5), girls swimming beat Choate (102-82) while girls squash beat Westminster (7-0) but fell to Sacred Heart (5-2).

Ware 45, Athol 42 — Oliv ia Horrigan scored 12 points, Jenna Bonenfant finished with 11 points while Emily King tallied nine points for the Bears in a Franklin County League South loss to Ware on Thursday. 

Lenox 41, Mahar 38 — Irati Martinez finished with 11 points in the Senators’ Franklin County League North loss to the Millionaires on Thursday in Lenox. 

Nevaeh Scribner scored  nine points while Thea Whitmore and Hayden Comeau both recorded six points for Mahar.

FCHA results

Harlon Hickey and Samuel Edson scored for the FCHA 10U White squad in a 4-2 loss to Holy Name on Sunday. 

Natalie Palasciano tallied an assist while Jacoby Houle played well in goal for FCHA.
