NORTHAMPTON — It looked like things were headed for a tightly contested game down the stretch between the Greenfield Post 81 and the Northampton Post 28 Senior American Legion teams on Wednesday at Arcanum Field.

Mother Nature had other plans.

Greenfield held a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the third inning, but after Northampton’s Max Edwards drew a walk, the skies opened up. Thunder and lightning ensued, forcing a delay and ultimately a cancellation. The contest was declared a no-contest and won’t be made up, as the American Legion playoffs begin this weekend and the cut-off date to finish regular season games is Thursday.

Post 81’s Jason Quinn reached with a single in the first inning but Northampton’s Trey Kuzmeski got a strikeout to end the frame without any additional damage done.

Northampton put runners on second and third in the bottom of the frame after Jamie Fowler singled and Liam Flynn was hit by a pitch, and both advanced a base on a passed ball. Greenfield pitcher Tyler Podolski got Kuzmeski to ground out to end the inning without a run coming across.

Both Kuzmeski and Podolski retired the side in the second, but Greenfield got its bats going in the third. Dylen Richardson reached with a walk and Luc Belhumeur blasted a double to deep left field, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Sam Connors cracked a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Richardson and Jesse Dubreuil launched another sacrifice fly to left field that brought in Belhumeur, giving Greenfield its 2-0 lead.

Northampton sits at 7-5 with one game remaining against Westfield on Thursday, while Greenfield is 4-8 entering this weekend’s postseason.
