Matt Lavoine’s hustle play lifted the Greenfield hockey team to another huge independent victory on Saturday night.

With his team locked in a 2-2 game in the third period against Longmeadow, the senior forward intercepted a clearing attempt and cashed in. Lavoine picked up the puck in the Lancers zone, deked a defender and somehow tucked a shot inside the post with 7 minutes, 29 seconds remaining. That goal ultimately stood as the game-winning tally in a 3-2 victory at Collins-Moylan Arena in Greenfield.

It was the second of the night for Lavoine. Trailing 1-0, he tallied the Green Wave’s first goal of the afternoon with 2:20 left in the second period. On the power play, Lavoine took control of the puck, skated into the slot and fired a shot that found the back of the net.

Still on the power play just over a minute later, Sammy Knight one-timed a loose puck through traffic in front of Longmeadow goalie Dimitri Beach (27 saves) to give the hosts a 2-1 lead with just 1:15 to go in the middle frame.

Dom Giampetro tied it back up for Longmeadow with 10:26 remaining in the third period, as he deposited a wrist shot into the back of the net to make it a 2-2 game.

Greenfield goalie Joshua Bordeaux made 35 saves in net to earn the victory, helping the Wave improve to 6-3 overall on the season. It was the team’s second straight win against Berry Division competition, after taking down Minnechaug by an identical 3-2 score on Thursday.

Jack Laurie and Jake Jurek each had an assist for the Wave.

Next up is a Wright Division game against Mount Everett on Saturday night back at Collins-Moylan (6:30 p.m.).
