The defending Intercounty League track and field champion Frontier Redhawks looked every bit the part in their opening meet of the season on Wednesday against Athol. 

The Redhawk girls walked away with a 145-0 victory over the Bears while the Frontier boys earned a 116-19 victory in South Deerfield. 

Hannah Davis led the way for the Redhawk girls, taking first place in the long jump (14 feet, 0.25 inches), triple jump (29-10.75) and 100-meter hurdles (19.1 seconds) while Leah Gump won the mile (5 minutes, 53 seconds) and 2 mile (12:39). 

Rounding out the Frontier winners on the girls side were Abbi Grover in the shot put (27-5), Lilly Novak in the discus (75-1), Micky McCarthy in the javelin (74-5), Maia Christensen in the high jump (4-6), Elsa Brown in the pole vault (6-6), Rylan Waskiewicz in the 100 (13.2) and 200 (28.6), Josie Fosnot in the 400 (67.4), Maddie Antes in the 400 hurdles (67.4) and Nicole Plasse in the 800 (2:42.9). The Redhawks also won the 4x100 (55.9) and 4x400 (4:44) relays. 

On the boys side, Jack Storm earned wins in the long jump (18-2.5), triple jump (37-11.75) and the 100 (11.6) while Ben Cachiguango won the 110 hurdles (16.7) and the 200 (24.3). 

Other winners for Frontier were Aiden Dredge in the javelin (127-7), Aidan Valderrama in the high jump (5-9), Adrien Pazmandy in the pole vault (10-6) and 400 hurdles (65.3), Evan Hedlund in the mile (4:40.3), Gus Radner in the 400 (58.2), Charlie Dennis in the 800 (2:09.4) and Hengxi Yue in the 2 mile (12:00.8). The Redhawks won the 4x100 (45.7) and 4x400 (4:01.9) relays. 

Athol’s Nicholas LeBlanc won the shot put (37-3.5) and the discus (130-10). 

Softball

Franklin Tech 19, Athol 3 (6) – The visiting Eagles scored eight runs in the top of the sixth inning to put the game away in Athol on Wednesday.

Hannah Gilbert racked up 16 strikeouts and picked up the win in the circle for Franklin Tech, which scored in every inning. Gilbert’s 16 strikeouts helped her eclipse the 300 strikeout mark in her career. 

Kylee Gamache, Cordelia Guerin, Kaitlin Trudeau and Gianna DiSciullo all had two hits in the victory. The visitors racked up eight doubles and a triple (Trudeau) on the afternoon.

The Bears scored three times in the bottom of the second to pull within 5-3. Madilyn Hermes had two hits and an RBI for Athol, while Kahlen Gregory and Abigail Lutz also drove in runs in the three-run frame. Jaylynn Chapalonis struck out three in the circle for the Bears. 

Turners 19, Frontier 0 (5) — Madi Liimatainen struck out 14 in the circle, and at the plate blasted a double and a grand slam to help the Thunder run away with a Franklin County League West victory over the Redhawks at Gary Mullins Field on Wednesday. 

Mia Marigliano knocked a single, a double and drove in a run, Holly Myers cracked a pair of hits, Marilyn Abarua tallied a hit and brought in a run, Janelle Massey recorded a base hit, Talbot and Thornton both had a hit and an RBI while Anne Kolodziej had a pair of RBIs for Turners. 

Ashley Taylor knocked a pair of hits while Sophia Pinardi also hit safely for Frontier. 

Baseball

Turners 13, Mohawk Trail 3 (5) – The Thunder scored five in the second and six more in the third inning, pulling away for a run-ruled victory on Wednesday in Turners Falls.

Alex Quezada and Derek Wissmann each blasted home runs for Turners. Dylan Richardson drove in three runs and Kainen Stevens had two RBIs in the win, while Jackson Cogswell racked up two hits and two runs scored. 

Stevens earned the win on the bump, striking out four in 4 1/3 innings of work before Julian Kaiser closed it out with a punchout of his own.

Mohawk Trail’s Jackson Lilienthal had a hit and two RBIs, while Grady Patenaude singled and drove in a run and Cole Bassett doubled.

Girls tennis

Greenfield 4, Chicopee 1 – A sweep of the singles matches propelled the Green Wave to their second straight win on Wednesday.

Greenfield (2-1) picked up wins from Amy Mihailicenco (6-2, 6-4), Izzy Semonelli (7-5, 6-4) and Rebecca Covalenco (6-4, 6-0) in singles action. The No. 1 doubles team of Lydia Wood and Karinna Kostov also won in straight sets via a 6-3, 6-1 final.

The Wave are off until April 22 against St. Mary’s.

Frontier 15, Athol 3 (5) — An 11-run first inning powered the Redhawks past the Bears in an independent contest in Athol Tuesday. 

Skyler Steele cracked three hits, one a double, and brought in three runs, Ashley Taylor doubled, singled and knocked in a run, Delaney Fifield doubled while Sophia Pinardi, S Melnick, Olivia Machon and Gabby Adams each had a hit and an RBI for Frontier. Taylor tossed all five innings, striking out nine and giving up four hits. 

Jenna Bonenfant knocked two hits and brought in a run, Allison Robertson tallied a hit and an RBI while Jaylynn Chapalonis hit safely for Athol.
