High schools: Franklin Tech softball opens season with win over Wahconah (PHOTOS)

The Franklin Tech softball team jumped on visiting Wahconah early on Monday in Turners Falls. 

The Eagles put four runs on the board in the first inning and tacked four more on in the second to take an early 8-0 lead. Tech held on from there, with Hannah Gilbert striking out 13 while surrendering just six hits, as the Eagles pulled away with a 12-4 season-opening independent victory at Nancy Gifford Field. 

Gilbert finished with three hits — including a double — and brought in three runs while Kylee Gamache cracked a pair of hits and drove in two runs for Franklin Tech.

Kait Trudeau knocked two hits, Lilianna Inman recorded one hit and two RBIs, Cordelia Guerin had a hit and an RBI while Gianna DiSciullo hit safely in the win.

Baseball

Greenfield 14, Granby 1 (5) — Deven Dubie allowed just two hits on the mound, striking out six batters and walking just three in four innings work to guide the Green Wave to an impressive opening win on Monday at Vets Field.

Greenfield (1-0) put up seven runs in the bottom of the first inning to provide plenty of support for their pitcher. Michael Pierce was 2-for-2 with a triple and three RBIs to pace the offense, and Preston Lafleur added two hits, including a triple, and drove in three runs as well. Luca Siano doubled and scored three times, Dubie helped himself with a triple that brought in two and Caleb Thomas singled and drove in a pair.

Pioneer 16, Franklin Tech 0 (5) — Hugh Cyhowski got the win on the mound, striking out five in 2.1 innings work, helping the Panthers walk away with an independent win over the Eagles in Northfield on Monday night. 

Evan Tsipenyuk doubled and drove in three runs, Jackson Campbell singled and  drove in four runs, Cyhowski brought in a pair of runs with a single, Ethan Mauthe singled and drove in a run while Alex McClelland added a hit for Pioneer. Ben Werner added three strikeouts on the mound while Jackson Glazier struck out one.

Tyler Yetter knocked a pair of hits while Ben Dodge, Jake Knight and Brody Hicks hit safely for Franklin Tech. 

Frontier 7, Ludlow 5 — It took both the Redhawks and the Lions a few innings to get the bats going on Monday. 

Frontier led 2-0 after three but exploded for four runs in the fourth. Ludlow responded with four runs of its own, the  Redhawks scored in the fifth, the Lions got a run back in the sixth  but Frontier held on late to earn an independent win in its season opener in Ludlow. 

Rosco Palmer and Brady Poreda each knocked a double and two singles, with Palmer adding an RBI. Grayson Loos tallied a pair of hits and RBIs, Jack Conlon cracked two hits and drove in a run while Nico Fasulo and Tyler Cusson both had a hit and an RBI in the win. 

Cusson struck out four, Wyatt Edes tallied three strikeouts while Owen Babb and Max Skribiski-Banack both struck out a pair for the Redhawks. 

“The game became too close for comfort after our hot start to the day,” Frontier coach Chris Williams said. “We are thankful to have another Skribiski-Banack in the rotation. Big time save for him to come in and perform at the level we needed him to be at to secure the win.”

Girls tennis

Greenfield 3, PVCICS 2 — Izzy Semonelli and Rebecca Covalenco earned wins in singles, helping the Green Wave squeak out a victory over the Dragons at the Davis Street Courts on Monday. 

Semonelli walked away with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at No. 2 singles while Rebecca Covalenco won at No. 3 singles by scores of 6-2, 7-5.

In No. 1 doubles, the Greenfield pairing of Lydia Wood and Karinna Kostov picked up a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 comeback victory to seal the Green Wave win. 

Boys tennis

Frontier 4, Palmer 1 — Robert Fuqua picked up a 6-1, 6-2 triumph in No. 2 singles while Caiden Manning earned a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 triumph in No. 3 singles, helping the Redhawks earn a win over the Panthers in South Deerfield on Monday. 

Oliver Brown and Brayden Reipold took No. 1 doubles 6-2, 6-2 while Frontier won No. 2 doubles via forfeit.
