The runs came early and often between the Athol and Mahar softball teams on Wednesday.

The game was tied at 12 going into the sixth, when the Bear bats took over the game by scoring eight in the sixth and one in the seventh to pull away with a 21-15 Franklin County League East win in Orange.

Alyssa Logan and Hailey Cummings each knocked four hits and drove in two runs for Athol. Allison Robertson recorded three hits and four RBIs, Jenna Bonenfant, Madilyn Hermes and Giana Vaillancourt each tallied three hits while Jaylynn Chapalonis and Kahlen Gregory both tallied two hits in the win.

Bella Malo had two hits while Hayden Comeau, Kailyn Hebert, Gabby Matthews and Carly Beaton had a hit and an RBI for Mahar.

Greenfield 9, Hampshire 6 (8) — Seven innings wasn’t enough to decide a winner in Westhampton on Wednesday.

The Green Wave erupted for five runs in the top of the sixth to take a 6-1 lead. That held until the bottom of the seventh when the Raiders went on a run of their own, tacking five runs on the board to tie the game at six and force extras.

The Greenfield bats stayed alive in the eighth, with Carly Blanchard bringing in a run on a fielders choice while freshman Ivy Rae knocked two runs in with a single to give the Green Wave a 9-6 lead. MacKenzie Paulin shut Hampshire down in the bottom of the frame to lift Greenfield to an independent win.

“It’s always good beating a quality team like Hampshire,” Green Wave coach John Hickey said. “I’m really pleased with how we put the ball in play. We had 13 hits as a team and only struck out six times. The first time we played Hampshire we had double-digit strikeouts so this was an improvement.”
