H.S. Roundup: Frontier boys volleyball suffers first loss of season, falls to West Springfield

The Frontier boys volleyball team’s unbeaten streak to open the season came to a close on Thursday. 

Visiting West Springfield took the opening set and didn’t look back, with the Redhawks falling 25-15, 25-15, 25-21 at Goodnow Gymnasium in South Deerfield. 

Frontier now sits at 8-1 on the season. 

“Tough loss,” Redhawks coach Sean MacDonald said. “We were playing shorthanded with injuries and vacation. Take nothing away from West Springfield as they were the better and more experienced team. We are looking forward to playing them again.” 

Owen Babb led the way with seven kills in the defeat. Aleks Carey put down five kills, Jack Carey recorded four kills, Brady Burch tallied three kills while Ngawang Deter dished 18 assists for Frontier. 

Softball

Franklin Tech 26, Smith Academy 4 (5) – The offense continued to roll Thursday for the Eagles, which scored 10 runs in both the third and fourth innings en route to the five-inning rout in Hatfield.

Franklin Tech (4-1) pounded out 18 hits, including a pair of home runs from sophomore Hannah Gilbert for the second game in a row. Gilbert finished 2-for-3 with five RBIs, while Lilly Ross also homered and tripled as part of a five-RBI outing.

Freshman Alison George had two hits and four RBIs in an impressive varsity call-up for Tech, while classmates Jenna Petrowicz and Mercedes Selivanoff both had a hit and two RBIs to aid the attack.

Ross struck out 11 in the circle to earn the win, tossing all five innings while allowing just three hits and two walks.

Next up, the Eagles will play their home opener on Friday when Lee comes to the Powertown. Franklin Tech played its first five games on the road while waiting for Nancy Gifford Field to be repaired following off-season damage done by an automobile.

Hopkins 3, Mohawk Trail 1 — The Warriors held their own against the Golden Hawks, with Riley Giard striking out five and holding Hopkins to just three runs in a loss in Buckland on Thursday. 

Giard doubled and singled at the plate while Abby Moffatt and Addie Loomis each had a base hit for Mohawk Trail. 

Kaelyn Zakaitis struck out 17 for the Golden Hawks while Taylor Barry tripled in the win. 

Girls tennis

St. Mary’s 3, Mohawk Trail 2 — The Warriors took the top two singles matches but the Saints came out on top at No. 3 singles and both doubles matches to earn a 3-2 win in Buckland on Thursday. 

Palmer King pulled away with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at No. 1 singles while Paige King earned a 7-5, 6-1 victory in No. 2 singles for the Warriors.

Baseball

Hampshire 24, Mohawk Trail 2 – Seventh-grader Brady Gancarz had a two-run single for the Warriors, which dropped a 24-2 decision to high-powered Hampshire on Thursday.

Freshman Colin Hogan earned the win on the mound for the Raiders, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out seven in four innings of work.
