GREENFIELD — The Greenfield girls basketball team made things interesting late against Easthampton on Friday at Nichols Gymnasium.

Trailing by as many as 14 points in the fourth quarter, Greenfield’s Amber Bergeron willed the Green Wave back in the game.

The senior scored 11 of her game-high 30 points in the final eight minutes of action. Bergeron went on a personal 6-0 run, getting to the line for a free throw, knocking down a 3-pointer and forcing a steal and converting a layup that cut the lead to 49-43 with 30 seconds left.

Easthampton’s Kayley Downie knocked down her free throws late however, allowing Easthampton to hold on for a 54-43 Franklin County League North victory.

“We made it interesting late,” Bergeron said. “We just need to work better as a team. Our press was really good toward the end of the game. If we can do that for a full game we’ll be OK.”

Greenfield (2-3, 0-3) led 16-15 at the end of an entertaining first quarter. Bergeron scored eight points in the frame while Gloria McDonald made a pair of shots and Tayler Bergeron added a basket.

The Easthampton defense took over in the second quarter. Tayler Bergeron was the lone Green Wave player to knock down a field goal in the frame while the Eagles (6-0, 3-0) opened on a 7-0 run, helping them take a 28-20 lead into the half.

Amber Bergeron kept Greenfield in the game in the third quarter, scoring seven of Greenfield’s 10 points, but Easthampton was able to get the ball to the basket to hold a 40-30 lead after three quarters.

While not a win, a young Greenfield team has hung tough in all of its FCL North contests thus far, with plenty of positives and things to build on moving forward.

“Coming into the season we knew we were a really young team,” Bergeron said. “We didn’t think we’d be able to compete with these really good team. We’re out here competing with them and it’s really encouraging.”
