ORANGE — The Mahar girls basketball team started strong, but could not hold on in a 57-43 loss to Greenfield, the top team in the Franklin North, Tuesday night.

The only loss for the Green Wave (7-1, 4-0) came against Whitman-Hanson — a team from eastern Massachusetts.

Mahar (4-4, 2-2 Franklin North) had a 15-3 lead after the first quarter.

The Senators did just about everything well to start the game: they took advantage of turnovers, rebounded after a Greenfield miss and made the extra pass on offense.

Five players scored in the first quarter for Mahar with Micalyn Mailloux scoring the first six points of the game.

Mailloux finished with 12 points.

Jazmyn Vautour added 10 points for the Senators with Abby Bonk adding seven.

The Green Wave took over in the second quarter. Greenfield started the second quarter on a 12-0 run to tie the game and eventually took the lead heading into halftime, 29-21.

In the end it was a 26-6 second quarter for the Green Wave.

Once Greenfield started to score it allowed it to set up its press and get into passing lanes to draw turnovers.

Mahar did a good job defending Greenfield’s Samantha Smith, who finished with five points.

But the Green Wave got double-digit scoring from Raquel Provost (18 points), Katie Haselton (17 points) and Raegan Hickey (15 points).

Greenfield outscored Mahar 28-22 in the second half.
