ORANGE — The Orange Fire Department is teaming up with the Dunkin’ Donuts location in the Hannaford Plaza for a community-oriented event on Saturday to teach youngsters the importance of fire safety and prevention.
The two are co-sponsoring an ice cream social from 1 to 3 p.m., during which time firefighters will be on hand to answer questions about fire safety. Ice cream cones will be $1 for children.
“It’s a chance for us to talk about home escape plans ... and smoke detectors, not playing with matches or lighters,” said Orange firefighter/paramedic Meaghan Ahearn, who is also the Fire Department’s public education officer.
Sparky, the mascot of the National Fire Protection Association, may stop by, Ahearn said. Additionally, she said the Orange Police Department and Athol Fire Department plan to send representatives if call volume allows.
Ahearn said the Dunkin’ Donuts manager reached out to her for Saturday’s event because the location is also the site of the Police Department’s “Coffee with a Cop” events. She said one of these ice cream socials was held a couple of years ago.
“It was very successful,” Ahearn said. “We had quite a few people come by and visit.”
