Bulletin Board: Abduli Gilmore wins two matches at MIAA All State Wrestling Tournament

Mahar’s Abduli Gilmore won a pair of matches in the MIAA All State Meet on Friday at Reading High School. 

Gilmore, the No. 3 seed at 113, defeated Tyngsborough’s Carter Johnson via second period pin to earn a spot in the quarterfinals, where he faced off against Haverhill’s Shea Morris. Gilmore was unable to get past Morris, dropping a 12-3 decision. 

In the consolation bracket, Gilmore faced off against Walpole’s Logan Murphy and earned a second period pin to stay alive going into Saturday, where he’ll take on Lowell’s Jaxson Phachansiri with a spot in the consolation semifinals on the line. 

Mohawk Trail’s Will VanVleet competed as the No. 11 seed at 220 on Friday, dropping his opening match to No. 6 seeded Heath McGilvray, 10-3. VanVleet then faced Haverhill’s Matt Harrold but fell via pin to end what was a great season from the junior. 

The MIAA Girls All State Wrestling Tournament also took place on Friday at Reading, with three Franklin Tech girls, one Frontier girl competing. 

After losing her first match of the day, Eagle Anaray Yang went on to win her next three matches at 127 by pin against  South Shore’s Isabella Ventresca, Sharon’s Sarah Kinsman and Granby’s Eliza Speek to earn a spot in the consolation Round of Four.

Mia Marigliano had a big day for Franklin Tech at 127. She won her opening match over Durfee’s Lilah Porter before losing her second match of the day. She followed that up by winning three in a row via pin to earn a spot in the Round of Four of the consolation bracket, beating Finley Hurley of Greater Lawrence, Gamaelle Charles of Boston Latin and Anjue Liang of Boston Latin to do so. Jacqueline Churchill lost her lone match of the day at 215 and will compete in the Round of Four of the consolation bracket on Saturday.

Frontier’s Jocelyn Antes won her opening two matches of the day at 118, beating Francesca Casoli of Northeast Metro Tech and Naylis Alejandro of Hampden Charter by pin, but lost her last two matches of the day.

Tickets for all Western Mass. finals are online ticketing only, with no cash being accepted on site. Tickets can be purchased on https://pviac.hometownticketing.com. Tickets for adults cost $8 and for students, the cost is $6. Once the tickets are purchased online, they can be saved to your phone or you can print out a paper copy to have scanned at the game. 

Greenfield Elks 

Roxanne Goulet took first in the Greenfield Elks Pitch League with 26 points, followed by Sharon Rawson and Pete Quintana in second (22) and John Richardson, Mike Larabee and Bill Martin in third (21). 

Bowling

Holly Brown and Kyle Leger rolled the high single (110) and triple (289) in Sunday Scotch Doubles at the Shelburne Falls Bowling Alley this past week. 

Jen Tobey rolled the women’s high single (99), Holly Brown had the high triple (268), Ken Bradley rolled the men’s high single (133) and Stuart Kingsley rolled the high triple (299) in the Monday Mixed League. In the Wednesday Mixed League, Marilyn Wilson had the women’s high single (95) and triple (267) while Bob Hayward had the men’s high single (101) and Jon Hall had the men’s high triple (277). 

In the Thursday Mixed Social, Colleen Barrows rolled the women’s high single (118) and triple (315) while John Rodgers had the men’s high single (144) and triple (315). 

Berkshire Highlands Pentathlon

The Berkshire Highlands Pentathlon is returning to Charlemont in April. 

The Pentathlon is scheduled to take place on April 1 at Berkshire East Mountain Resort. The race includes five events: a 4.5-mile trail run, an 18-mile bicycle road ride, a two-mile paddle, a two-mile adventure run and a two-mile adventure run and climb down the ski mountain. Participants can choose to complete the course as a team or solo.

Nearly 200 athletes participated last year, with 60 signed up for the 2023 event so far. There will be food and raffle prizes to winners in each category. There is a discounted entry fee for family teams and under-19 entrants. 

Online registration is available now at BikeReg.com. Race day registration will be available, with the race still looking for volunteers. This year’s benefactor is the Mary Lyon Foundation.
