PHILLIPSTON — State and local police and rescue units responded to a multiple-vehicle accident on Route 2 Thursday morning, that occurred in the west bound travel lane between Exits 18 and 19.

Temperatures hovered in the low teens while firefighters used extrication tools to free the multiple occupants from crash vehicles at the scene.

According to the Massachusetts State Police one person was taken to a hospital by helicopter and four others were transported by ambulance.

Traffic along that stretch of Route 2 was detoured for more than an hour. By 1 p.m., both lanes were cleared for travel. The crash occurred about a half mile west of the Phillipston exit.

The highway goes from a four-lane divided highway to a two-lane limited-access road divided only by reflectors in that area.

Calls to the Athol State Police barracks seeking more information were referred to the MSP media relations department. No response had been received by press time.
