ATHOL — The River Rat Race is changing its look this year. The Athol Lions Club, which organizes the race, decided to include area art students in a contest to design the shirt for the upcoming 56th annual event, scheduled for Saturday, April 13.

“This is the first time we’ve done it,” said project chair Kim Emond. “We probably had 12-15 applicants from Athol. We’re hoping it’s a huge success and to continue it every year,” for Athol and Mahar high school art students.

The top five winners were Athol High School students. First prize of $150 went to Alexis Her, whose design will grace the commemorative t-shirts and sweatshirts printed by Orange Graphix.

Second place winner of $100 was Alexia Park. Joslyn Jaillet won the $50 third prize. Fourth place winner was Rashelly Dalmau Gonzalez, and Dylan Castine won fifth place. All five winners received a 2019 River Rat Race sweatshirt.

Race t-shirts and sweatshirts will be available Saturday in Athol and Orange locations. In Athol: Flint’s Garage Sales, Kimball-Cooke Insurance, Deja Vu Women’s Consignments, Uptown Package Store, and B&B Furniture Rehab Boutique. In Orange: Trail Head Outfitters & General Store, Orange Graphix, RCees Pub (will take orders), White Cloud Restaurant and Herrick’s Tavern.

T-shirt sizes available are Small to XL for $20, and 2X and up, $23. Sweatshirts will be available Small-XL for $35, 2X and up, $38.

Proceeds from shirt sales will benefit Athol Lions Club community projects.
