ORANGE — The Mahar girls varsity basketball team has created a model of consistency.

For the fifth week in a row, the Senators ranked No. 18 in the top-20 rankings of Western Massachusetts girls basketball. Masslive High School Sports released the rankings on Feb. 20.

The Senators defeated Frontier Regional High School, which ranked 19th in the latest poll, 38-29, in their final game of the season. Before losing to Greenfield High School on Feb. 16 in their second to last game, the Senators had won five straight games and won nine out of their previous 10. The team’s only loss during that span was 36-35 to No. 11 Wahconah Warriors. The Warriors held a 16-3 record prior to last night’s game against Lee High School.

Mahar began the year 0-2 and then 1-3. The Senators suffered losses to Monson High School, which finished the year 13-7, Palmer High School, which finished the year 8-12 and Monument Mountain, which ranked No. 17 in Western Mass. in the latest poll and finished the year 11-9.

Throughout the course of the year, the Senators defeated rival Athol twice and Turners Falls, which had appeared in the top-20 at times during the season. The team defeated Ware High School, 60-36, on Jan. 30, when Ware ranked 20th in Western Mass.
