ATHOL — Quabbin Valley Healthcare is now in its third month of new ownership.

Scott Wheeler and several partners from Blupoint Healthcare purchased the facility at 821 Daniel Shays Highway from Cambridge Healthcare Group on Jan. 1. Wheeler said except for some impending renovations and the addition of some clinical programs, the facility’s culture is largely unchanged.

“(Cambridge Healthcare Group) are absolutely fantastic people, great stewards of the building, and we want to continue that,” he said, adding that the group owned the building for about 40 years. He had worked independently for and with Cambridge Healthcare Group for 25 years in New England and New York.

A Newburyport resident, Wheeler said he stays in the area three nights a week in his capacity as the facility’s managing owner.

He said the health care center employs more than 200 workers, both full- and part-time, and there are plans to add clinical staff positions. The facility offers long-term care as well as short-term rehabilitation, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia care, and other programs such as cardiovascular and pulmonary care. Wheeler said the building has 142 long-term residents, and their loved ones are involved with the care the facility renders.

“It’s great to be a part of it,” he said. “It’s tremendous. It’s really a part of the fabric of the community, which is exactly what you’d want it to be.”

Wheeler mentioned the building will be modernized slightly (architects and designers are expected next week) and the facility is changing how it educates and trains its staff.

“I’m a former teacher, so I really take education and training to heart,” he said. “It’s a phenomenal group of people.”
