KEENE, N.H. — The Mahar girls basketball team beat a New Hampshire state champion to open its summer league season on Tuesday.

The Senators beat Monadnock Regional High School, 22-17, at Keene High School.

The Huskies were the NHIAA Division III state champions in the Granite State last winter.

Delaney Parker led Mahar with eight points, adding three steals and three assists.

“I thought I did pretty well,” Parker said. “I definitely have to work on my endurance. There are some things we can improve on.”

The Huskies made a late run in the second half, cutting the lead to 20-15 after some Mahar turnovers led to transition buckets.

A Siobhan Davis putback stopped the Monadnock run.

In the Keene Summer League, teams play two 16-minute halves with running time and every trip to the free throw line is for one shot regardless of the situation.

Coach Scott Parker used mass substitutions of the first and second teams throughout the game.

“They played pretty well considering we are such a new team,” Coach Parker said. “A lot of younger girls. We can’t really run offense. It’s kind of a free for all. I usually run the first half like that and use the second half for intermingling.”

The Senators played some aggressive man-to-man defense in the first half and did well holding Monadnock to single-digit scoring before intermission.

“We were getting frazzled so I wanted to slow the game down,” Coach Parker said. “Not bad for summer ball.”

Mahar switched to a zone in the second half and continued to limit Monadnock's chances

Micalyn Mailloux had five points with three steals for Mahar.

Mahar took a 11-5 lead after two steals by Parker led to open layups. Natalie Belloli gave the Senators a 14-7 lead just before halftime with a 3-pointer from the top of the key.

Haylee Allen played some solid defense in the paint for Mahar with three blocks. Allen and Jordan Fournier scored two points each.

Mahar 36, Pioneer 26— The Senators’ JV summer league team opened its season with a 36-26 win over the Panthers on Tuesday in Keene.

Abby Henne led the Senators with 14 points while Jenna Bonenfant added 10 points.

Chloe Rourke scored nine for the Panthers.

Mahar 36, North Middlesex 21 — An early second-half run gave the Senator boys a 36-21 win over North Middlesex in Fitchburg on Tuesday.

Mahar started the half on a 7-0 run to pull away from previously undefeated North Middlesex.

Charlie Barnes led Mahar (3-0) with nine points.

Matt Lyesiuk hit a couple of 3-pointer for the Senators. Ayden Santana scored six points and played well in the paint.
