After a second-round 78, Jacob Zaranek’s first-ever trip to the U.S. Amateur Championship came to an end on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old South Deerfield resident capped his tournament with an 8-over par round of 78 and missed the cut at the 2019 edition of the top event in amateur golf. Playing on the famed No. 2 course at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club (N.C.), Zaranek opened his round with a double bogey on the first hole and was unable to string birdies together to get back in contention.

Zaranek’s two-day total of 13-over 153 had him in a tie for 208th place in the field. The cut line to advance to today’s match play portion of the tournament sat at 5-over. Weather halted play at 4:57 p.m. on Tuesday for over an hour before players were allowed back out at 6:15. Zaranek had a morning tee time and was already in the clubhouse when the weather rolled through North Carolina.

Following Monday’s 75 at Pinehurst’s No. 4 course, the rising junior at Fairfield University opened his Round 2 with a double bogey on the 401-yard par 4 first hole. He followed with bogeys on Nos. 4 and 6, making the turn at 4-over 39.

Zaranek bogeyed No. 11 and dropped two more shots with a double bogey on the par 4 12th hole to fall to 7-over on his round.

After sinking five birdies in his first round on Monday, Zaranek made his lone birdie of the day Tuesday on the 386-yard par 4 13th hole.

He closed out his round with pars on 14, 15 and 18, while making bogey on Nos. 16 and 17. All told, he shot 39 on both the front and back nines en route to the 8-over 78.

First-round leader Brandon Wu shot a 2-over 72 on Tuesday, but still captured medalist honors by one stroke at 3-under 137. The field was cut to 64 golfers for single-elimination match play.

Fox Sports 1 will broadcast matches today from 4-7 p.m.
