School roundup: Turners Falls volleyball powers past Pioneer

It was a dominant effort from start-to-finish for the Turners Falls volleyball team on Wednesday night.

The Powertown rolled past Pioneer, 3-0, in a Northern League match played in Turners.

The Thunder took the first set 25-3 and didn’t look back, winning the second set, 25-4, and the third set, 25-6.

Hailey Bogusz had six assists and 10 aces in the win, while Steph Peterson added four aces and a pair of kills. Olivia Stafford had four aces and Abigail Holloway had an ace and three kills.

■ Elsewhere, Greenfield took care of business against Mohawk Trail, defeating the Warriors, 3-0 in Buckland.

The Green Wave won a contested first set, 26-24, before claiming the second set, 25-19, and the third set, 25-18.

It was the second victory of the season for Greenfield, which improved to 2-2 overall.

Hannah Mailloux had 10 kills, Cassie Mattei had six aces and seven digs and Gianna Conte had five aces and six digs in the winning effort. 

Mohawk’s Cassidy Upton had five kills, three digs and five aces, Octavia Crawford had four kills and five assists and Elly Patnode added a pair of kills and aces in the loss. 

■ In a back-and-forth contest, Franklin Tech fell short against Renaissance, dropping a 3-1 decision in Springfield on Wednesday.

The Phoenix captured the first set, 25-22, but Tech battled back to win the second set by three points. Renaissance pulled away in the third set to win 25-13, then narrowly won the fourth set, 27-25.

Emily Ryan put down four aces and five kills for the Eagles, while Lilian Poirier contributed seven aces, two kills and two digs. Also contributing was Faith Smith, who had two blocks and five kills.


Frontier shuts out Hopkins

All six Frontier golfers shot between a 40 and 45 in the teams’ 24-0 shutout of Hopkins in Suburban West action Wednesday at Holyoke Country Club. 

Mikey Corduff and Kyle Maynard each shot a 40 and Gunnar Moore shot a 42 in what was a dominant day on the course for the Red Hawks.

■ Elsewhere, the Mahar golf team fell to Palmer, 23½-½, in a Suburban West match played at Quaboag Country Club in Monson.

Ethan Beauchemin of Palmer shot a match-low 38, defeating Tucker Ninteau of Mahar in the No. 1 matchup. Ninteau carded a 43.

Cameron Doyle shot a 65 in the No. 2 spot for the Senators and Andrew Finch shot a 59 in the No. 3 spot.

■ In other action, Pathfinder won each of the six matchups to claim a 21½-2½ decision over Mohawk at Cold Spring Country Club in Belchertown. 

Jake Russo shot the best score on the day, finishing with a 42 to earn four points for Pathfinder.

Logan Moore and Gage Patenaude shot the best scores on the day for Mohawk, each finishing with a 59.

Boys soccer

Four Rivers rolls

Evan Leaf and Avani Richardson both netted hat tricks, and Four Rivers rolled to an 8-0 thumping of Putney School in a River Valley Athletic League contest, Wednesday.

Henry Zaccara added a goal and an assist for the Otters, with Owen Stewart and Gillis MacDougall notching assists. MacDougall and Jonah Goldstein combined to make six saves, and the defense was paced by Aidan DiLorenzo.

Late goal derails Four Rivers win

Leading by a goal late, Four Rivers surrendered a tally and ended the game with a 2-2 draw against Dublin School in a River Valley Athletic League contest on Wednesday. 

Jessica Beck scored in the first half and Maitreya Smith had the lone second-half goal for the Otters, while Sage Fuller had a strong game in net.
