Dec. 2: Eat at Wendy’s for Athol H.S. senior class

ATHOL — The Athol High School Class of 2021 encourages readers to eat at Wendy’s of Athol every first Thursday of the month. You just have to mention the “Senior Class Fundraiser” at the time you pay and a portion of the proceeds goes to the class. Thank you!

Dec. 5: Bottle and Can Drive

ATHOL — The Athol High School Class of 2021 Redeemable Bottle and Can Drive will be held every first Saturday of the month at the Kessler Investments parking lot, 2070 Main St., from 9 a.m. to noon. Bring only Massachusetts-redeemable bottles and cans. No water, Gatorade-like or New Hampshire bottles and cans will be accepted. Dec. 8: The Chickadee’s Guide to Gardening

Join Dr. Desiree Narango on Tuesday, Dec. 8, at 5:30 p.m. for an engaging virtual presentation on why native plants matter for pollinators and songbirds. Narango will share her research on residential landscaping, non-native plants and insect eating bird populations. She will provide information on why plants and insects matter for bird conservation in human-dominated ecosystems. She will also give recommendations for plant choices to create high-quality bird habitat in your backyard. Dr. Narango is a wildlife ecologist at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. This free event is co-sponsored by Northfield Mountain Recreation and Environmental Center and the Northfield Bird Club. To register, go to www.bookeo.com/northfield. Dec. 9: ABNC Members Night Zoom meeting

Athol Bird and Nature Club President Dave Small says, “Come one and all! No matter where you are, you can participate in this year’s virtual members’ night: Wednesday, Dec. 9, from 7 to 9 p.m. (virtual on Zoom).

“Send up to 15 images you want to share to Dave@atholbirdclub.org or you can get me your photos on a stick drive, SD card, and if in doubt call me at 978-413-1772 and I’ll guide you in getting your images together to show.”

Thursdays and Saturdays: Book and media sale

WINCHENDON — The Friends of the Beals Memorial Library in Winchendon are holding their used book and media sale, now on Thursdays from 4 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon, by appointment only. The library is at 50 Pleasant St. in Winchendon. For more information or to make an appointment to either browse the book sale or contribute donations, call 978-297-0300.

Dec. 19: All-day Christmas Bird Count

Join this “Citizen Science” project, the longest continuously running bird data in the area.

Encourage your neighbors to begin feeding the week before the count (if bear activity is low) and consider other ways to safely count our area birds. We will have a virtual compilation via Zoom so people can log on and relate the days sightings and events.
