NEW SALEM — Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015, at Witty’s Funeral Home in Orange for Michael L. Barber, 62, of William Rice Road, who died on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at Athol Hospital.

The Rev. Dr. Megan Leary of the Orange Central Congregational Church officiated. Mike’s daughter, Mallory Barber, offered the eulogy.

Witty’s Funeral Home, 158 South Main St., Orange, was honored with directing the arrangements.

NEW SALEM — Michael L. Barber, 62, of William Rice Road, died peacefully late Tuesday evening, Nov. 3, 2015, at Athol Hospital with his wife and two daughters at his side, after a two-year battle with cancer which he handled with dignity and determination.

Born in Athol on Jan. 16, 1953, he was a son of the late Elwyn and Doris (Brown) Barber and grew up in New Salem.

Mike graduated from the Ralph C. Mahar Regional School in Orange with the class of 1971. While at Mahar, he served two years as president of the Fish ‘N Game Club as well as co-captain of the varsity baseball and football teams.

On Aug. 3, 1984, Mike married Annemarie (Greco) and they have enjoyed their 31 years together. He built their dream house, a log cabin, over 25 years ago and did everything including the site work.

Mike enjoyed trucking and co-owned Barber Trucking with his wife. He also enjoyed logging and cutting cordwood with his friends.

Never one to complain, Mike always told people he was “good.” He would be the first one to lend a hand to anyone in need. He was a devoted husband and father and cherished his time with family.

Mike had served as a volunteer fireman as well as a policeman for the town of New Salem.

An outdoorsman, he had enjoyed hunting and fishing, driving truck, being on his John Deere tractor and watching sports, especially the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots.

Mike’s daughter, Mallory, will be running in the Boston Marathon in his honor and memory to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (see below donation information).

Survivors include his beloved wife, Annemarie Barber of New Salem; daughters Allison Wyatt and her husband, Ben, of Spofford, N.H., Mallory Barber of New York, N.Y., and Bethany Barber of Davidson, N.C.; a son, Derek Barber of Athol; grandsons, Jacob Wyatt, Nathaniel Wyatt and Lucas Wyatt, all of Spofford, N.H.; a brother, Steve Barber of New Salem; nephews and nieces; and his dogs, “George” and “Pete.”

Mike was predeceased by his father on March 23, 1996, his mother on Nov. 2, 2007, and by a sister, Susan Barber.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 1 to 3 p.m., at Witty’s Funeral Home, 158 South Main St., Orange.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 3 p.m., at Witty’s Funeral Home in Orange. The Rev. Dr. Megan Leary of the Orange Central Congregational Church will officiate.

Interment will be private.
