ORANGE – The dilapidated structure known as the White Drum, which has housed numerous restaurants at 46 West Orange Road over the past nearly 90 years is no more, having been demolished earlier this month.
The storied building was torn down by Don Matthews Excavating, according to Megan Truchinskas, administrative assistant to Building Commissioner Jeffrey Cooke and the Orange Board of Health. The work began on Nov. 9 and was completed on Nov. 14.
The structure was most recently the Oriental House, a Chinese restaurant. The property is owned by Lin Hua Zhang, who also owns Ce Ce’s Chinese Restaurant in Turners Falls. The owner said the building had fallen into disrepair and needed to be demolished. There are no immediate plans for the space.
The property was the scene of a second-alarm blaze that required at least nine departments on July 6, 2016. The fire was deemed not suspicious in nature and was called in by workers on the site. Robert Legare, then Orange’s building commissioner, said there was no building permit for the work being done at the time of the fire. The owner was issued a $100 citation because it is a first offense. Legare described the damage as extensive. One firefighter was treated for a fall and returned to his job after being evaluated by EMTs. The fire was called in at 11:13 a.m. and was under control by roughly 1 p.m.
