ATHOL—First responders from Athol and Orange transported two people to area hospitals following an accident on Sunday.

According to Athol Fire Capt. Eric Jack, the accident was reported at 5:11 p.m. A vehicle had struck a utility pole on Main Street near Chestnut Hill Avenue, which broke the pole nearly in two. The Athol and Orange fire departments both sent an engine and ambulance to the scene. One person had to be extricated and both were transported to area hospitals.

Main Street was closed for several hours following the accident, according to Jack. Damage to the pole caused an extensive power outage to hundreds in the surrounding area. National Grid responded to the scene to repair the damaged lines and pole.

Police are currently investigating the accident to determine its cause. The scene was cleared by 6:30 p.m.
