Spectrum has announced an expansion of its services to Warwick and Royalston, among other rural towns, through the Federal Communications Commission’s Rural Digital Opportunity Fund.
According to the announcement, Spectrum internet, phone, and TV services will be available to nearly 1,200 homes and small businesses in Royalston and Warwick. This expansion is part of a multiyear effort through the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund (RDOF), which will provide $20.4 billion over 10 years to bring broadband and voice service to millions of homes and small businesses in rural areas.
Northeast Director of Communications Heidi Vandenbrouck said that Spectrum’s work is now 90% complete, at no cost to taxpayers.
“I’m grateful for Spectrum’s partnership with federal, state and local governments and partners to make broadband expansion a reality in Massachusetts’ rural areas, specifically the Town of Royalston,” said Selectboard Chair Rick Martin in a statement. “Access to high-speed internet is critical for residents and businesses to thrive and this investment is positioning our rural neighbors for success when it is completed.”
Spectrum’s RDOF expansion will provide broadband access to 1.3 million customer locations across 24 states in the coming years, according to the announcement. Spectrum has won more than $700 million in state broadband expansion subsidies, which will connect another 300,000 homes and small businesses.
“Massachusetts communities – regardless of location or zip code – deserve high-speed internet access. Charter’s RDOF expansion in Central and Western Massachusetts is important for our kids, their opportunities, our local economies, and keeping people here,” wrote Congressman Jim McGovern.
“Spectrum is bringing gigabit broadband to unserved communities in Massachusetts and across America through RDOF,” said Michael Liccione, Area Vice President, Field Operations for Charter Communications. “Our investment is making it possible to deliver the high-value broadband, mobile, TV and voice services now available in Royalston and Warwick. We are providing local residents and small businesses superior connectivity at highly competitive prices, backed by a team of skilled local technicians and 100% U.S.-based customer service.”
