ORANGE — A fire on Jones Street on Christmas Day is believed to have originated on a stovetop and was accidental, according to the State Fire Marshal’s office.

The three-alarm fire, reported at 15 Jones St. at 4:05 p.m., caused significant interior damage to the home and resulted in the death of two dogs. The damage was enough to render the home uninhabitable. All occupants had been able to safely evacuate, according to fire officials, though one was transported to Athol Hospital by Northfield EMS with non-life-threatening injuries.

Another fire, which was reported on Dec. 13 at 99 West River St., claimed the life of 65-year-old Debra Marini. A second resident was hospitalized, but is believed to make a full recovery. State Fire Marshal officials continue to investigate the cause of that fire, but any potential causes being looked at would be accidental.

Authorities have deemed the West River Street home a total loss and two other residents have been displaced. Several dogs were successfully rescued, while several more perished in the blaze, according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
