ORANGE — The Selectboard voted to promote Police Sgt. Adam Cooley to lieutenant on Wednesday, less than a month after Police Chief James Sullivan announced his plan to create a lieutenant’s position within his department to fine-tune its command structure.

Sullivan explained at the virtual meeting that he offered the job to Cooley and his other sergeant, Jonathan Cole.

“And Sgt. Cole, who is my second-shift … patrol supervisor, indicated that he has very little interest in coming to the day shift and burying himself in the administrative responsibilities that this lieutenant’s position’s going to be,” Sullivan said to smiles from a couple of Selectboard members. “So, clearly, he’s smarter than myself and Sgt. Cooley. So that made the decision easy.”

Sullivan explained Cooley had some family obligations and could not attend Wednesday’s virtual meeting. Cooley, previously an officer, was sworn in as a sergeant in December 2019.

“Congratulations to new Lt. Cooley,” Selectboard Chair Jane Peirce said after the vote.

Sullivan had mentioned at the Dec. 1 meeting that the lieutenant position would encompass the day shift, working primarily 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. The chief has also added responsibilities, such as the handling of public records requests and the overseeing of the sex offender registry, due to the retirement of longtime Administrative Assistant Brenda Anderson on Nov. 1. Sullivan explained the difference in pay will be mostly absorbed into his department’s budget because the chief is also restructuring the administrative assistant position recently filled by Cally Matthews, who is not making the same pay as Anderson was when she retired.

“It’s not a significant hit to my budget,” he said on Dec. 1.
