Madelyn Robertson joins Regis College Service immersion program

WESTON — Service immersion trips are a foundation of Regis’ mission, culture, and community. As a university that provides students the opportunity to serve their neighbor without distinction, Regis offers many service opportunities throughout the year, both locally and internationally.

Madelyn Robertson of Athol spent the 2023 spring break on a service immersion trip to Los Angeles. On this trip, Regis students spent time in the Dolores Mission Parish in the neighborhood of Boyle Heights, right outside of downtown Los Angeles. The students worked with Homeboy Industries, a nationally acclaimed gang-intervention program founded by Fr. Greg Boyle, S.J.

“As one of our student leaders, Iman Raja ‘24, perfectly expressed, our trip to LA became our very own pilgrimage,” said Jeff E. Joseph, MS, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and a staff leader of the service trip. “Our experiences ranged from cooking breakfast for the housing insecure of Boyle Heights before sunrise to storytelling led by our dear neighbors at Dolores Mission School, The Catholic Worker, and Homeboy Industries. We left wanting more time to serve, more time to listen, more time to learn, and more time together.”

The first Regis-sponsored trip to Los Angeles was in December 2016; since its founding it has grown and has continued to make an impact on the lives of student participants.
