The parishioners of Starrett Memorial United Methodist Church, 40 Island St. in Athol, invite the community to their most popular supper. On Saturday, April 22, at 6 p.m. the church will be a classic roast turkey dinner. This complete, freshly prepared meal includes generous portions of golden, oven-roasted turkey, real mashed potatoes, stuffing, a veggie, cranberry sauce, salad, bread, and their famous home-baked pie, all for just $12. Reservations are required, will be accepted through Friday, April 21, at noon, and can be made by calling 978-249-9561.
Prepared and served by dedicated volunteers, the kitchen is overseen by ServSafe certified head cook Paul Maier Jr. With this being the last supper of the season, everyone involved is excited to have Fellowship Hall filled with guests partaking in great food, friendly conversation, and good company. Make reservations now and leave the cooking and cleaning to the volunteers at SMUMC. In addition to in-person dining, a limited number of full dinners (including pie) are available for take-out/pick-up as well as local delivery. Reservations are required for all meals. Take-out meals will be ready for pick-up at 5:45 p.m and guests should use the Marble St. parking lot and backdoor for easy access.

NEW SALEM — On Tuesday, April 25, a 6:30 p.m., the New Salem Public Library will present “A Walk Through the Garden with Eleanor Roosevelt” in the library’s Community Room.
Join author and historian Carol Cohen for a look into the life of Eleanor Roosevelt. During this presentation, she will provide a first-person narrative, allowing the audience to meet Eleanor Roosevelt and learn about her Victory Garden and other humanitarian efforts during World War II.
Part portrayal and part presentation, this interactive program is great for adults and teens, as well as families with older children. During World War II, Eleanor Roosevelt planted an iconic Victory Garden on the White House lawn and encouraged other Americans to do the same.
Using first-person narrative, this program engages the audience as they learn about Eleanor Roosevelt’s humanitarian efforts, as well her recognition of those who took a major role in the feeding of America during World War II. The program also includes an informative PowerPoint presentation outlining the place of Victory Gardens in American history and their relevance in today’s world.
Cohen teaches at Lesley University and is a published historian, playwright, and owner of an educational consulting company. She recently published “Begin with a Box: A Hands On Resource for Teaching and Learning” with Empress Publishers and is presently working on “Lessons with Eleanor Roosevelt.”

There are many uncertainties and questions pertaining to the Athol Fire Department as it relates to emergency response, equipment, capabilities, apparatus, and most importantly staffing. This is the time to ask in a group setting and on a one-on-one basis. This will take place at the Athol Fire Department, 2251 Main St., from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

ATHOL — Regional entertainer Dan Kirouac will bring a one-hour piano and vocal concert to the Athol Senior Center on Wednesday, May 24, at 1 p.m. This will feature radio-friendly pop, rock, and easy-listening songs of the 1960s and 1970s.
The senior center is located at 82 Freedom St. in Athol. The performance is open to members of the Athol senior community and others as space and interest allow. Inquiries at 978-249-9001.

ATHOL — Seniors, do you need to get away and take a break from the family? Adult children, do you need a break from your parents for a day? Then join the Golden Age Club and leave the driving to Wilson Bus Lines. On June 6, travel to Hart’s Turkey Farm in Meredith N.H., be served lunch and then on to enjoy a 90-minute cruise on Squam Lake where the Academy Award winning movie “On Golden Pond” was filmed.
