New Salem Public Library to host gravestone-rubbing workshop

NEW SALEM — The New Salem Public Library plans to host a gravestone-rubbing workshop presented by Brenda Sullivan, of Gravestone Girls on Saturday at 10 a.m. The program participants will meet at the library and proceed to Center Cemetery next door.

The program will open with Sullivan’s overview of the cemetery, its geology, the types of stones, the symbols, and other points of interest. Following this, she will demonstrate proper techniques, and participants will create their own rubbings with Sullivan’s guidance. All materials will be provided, but participants are advised to wear comfortable clothes they won’t mind getting dirty and sturdy shoes. They should also bring water, a hat, and sunscreen. Sullivan has been immersed in gravestone art, history and symbolism for more than 30 years. Her education art history and restoration led to the creation of Gravestone Girls and a mission to “Keep Our Dead Alive” through educational lectures, tours, classes and creation of New England gravestone replicas. Gravestone Girls creates replicas of old New England gravestones in the form of wall hangings, magnets, coasters, mirrors, frames and more. It works with institutions nationwide, raising cemetery awareness and teaching citizens about the history buried under their feet.

New Salem to hold special election Oct. 25

NEW SALEM — A special election to fill two Selectboard vacancies will be held Oct. 25 from 11:45 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Both vacancies are unexpired terms with one ending in May 2023 and the other ending in May 2024.

Nomination papers are available in the Town Clerk’s Office at 15 South Main St. The final day to register to vote for the special election is Oct. 14.

State election ballots available for Wendell voters

WENDELL — The Republican and Democratic sample ballots for the 2022 state election are now available on Wendell’s municipal website.
