NEW SALEM — The driver of a Chrysler sedan was transported to the hospital Tuesday after crashing over a guardrail and down an embankment off Route 202.

Emergency crews were notified about the accident around 3:25 p.m., according to New Salem Fire Chief Joe Cuneo. There was only one car with one occupant involved. It wasn’t clear how badly the person was injured.

About 20 minutes after the 911 call an ambulance from Orange could be seen pulling away from the scene as local firefighters continued to work around the car, which came to a rest 15 feet down an embankment. Debris from the car rested against the guardrail 20 feet away just past Orange Road. The driver was apparently traveling into New Salem from Orange when the accident happened.

State Police officers directed one traffic around the accident scene to allow firefighters adequate space to work.
