ATHOL — Firefighters were able to get a house fire on Petersham Road under control with no injuries reported.

Fire crews were called to 559 Petersham Road/Route 32 shortly after noon on Thursday, with units from Orange providing mutual aid. The road was shut down in both directions between Main Street/Route 2A and Exit 75 on Route 2.

The fire was knocked down fairly quickly and little damage could be seen from outside the home, owned by Ricky Piro. No injuries were reported.

Just moments before the fire was reported, a 10” water main in front of Athol High School ruptured, according to officials. Public works informed the fire department to be aware that no water was being fed from downtown Athol to replenish the water tank on Garfield Hill, the contents of which were used to fight the fire.
