ATHOL — An ongoing fundraiser provides the chance to satisfy that coffee craving and support the local library.

Booklover’s Brew, a coffee produced by Dean’s Beans Organic Coffee in Orange, is available for purchase at the Athol Public Library through November and December. First introduced last year, Assistant Library Director Robin Shtulman said it was brought back due demand from the community.

“It’s made in our community and it’s fair trade and the people who work there are part of the community,” said Shtulman.

Described as “a mellow, medium roast coffee” and “having a softly sweet flavor with notes of cinnamon and brown sugar,” Booklover’s Brew is available in the library’s lobby in regular for $12 a pound or decaf for $12.50. According to the library’s web site, the coffee is sourced directly from Serranos de Motozintla Cooperative in the southern Sierra Madre region of Chiapas, Mexico. All proceeds from the coffee sales benefit the Friends of the Athol Public Library.

Charlsie Gorski, office manager at Dean’s Beans, said this fundraising tool is utilized by local libraries, churches, and similar organizations. People can choose an existing flavor to sell or create their own custom blend, as the Athol Library has done. Gorski said Dean’s Beans has had a relationship with Serranos de Motozintla Cooperative for more than 30 years and was one of the first that they did business with.

“We have 13 different countries of coffees to choose from,” Gorski said. “We love doing this for local organizations to raise money.”

The Friends of the Athol Public Library sponsors special events, volunteer at the library, provide some of the museum and park passes, and more.

“People love it,” Shtulman said of the coffee. “It’s a great thing, the perfect time of year, and a terrific hostess gift.”
