ATHOL — The Athol Public Library will present a hands-on talk about the use of the library telescope, an Orion Starblaster donated by Sue and the late Rich Schueller, which adult patrons in good standing may borrow.
On Wednesday, May 15 at 6 p.m., learn how to handle the telescope, set it up, and use it to look at the night sky. The program is free, for all ages, and open to the public.
John Root and Jim Zebrowski of the Aldrich Astronomical Society will remain available after the presentation for one-to-one Q & A about the use of the library telescope.
If weather permits, attendees will head outside for some star gazing.
Zebrowski has worked as a physicist and engineer for a number of companies in Massachusetts over the past 35 years. He currently works full-time as President of the Aldrich Astronomical Society, Inc., which promotes knowledge about astronomy and space exploration for the public and especially youth through indoor presentations, STEM programming, and star gazing whenever the weather permits. Jim has also been a NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador for Massachusetts since 2001. Zebrowski also volunteers as a coach and test writer for the annual Reach for the Stars program for the Middle School Science Olympiad in Massachusetts which is done in collaboration with Assumption College in Worcester.
Root is a Central Massachusetts native who holds a BA in Environmental Science, MCL, from Clark University in Worcester. Root has been a member, for the past 25 years, of the Aldrich Astronomical Society, Inc., where he is currently the Library Telescope Program Coordinator.
Organizers say this is a great way for the community to get ready for the 2019 summer reading theme: A Universe of Stories!
This program is sponsored by the Aldrich Astronomical Society and the Friends of the Athol Public Library. Registration is required by calling 978-249-9515.
