ATHOL – This September, the Athol Public Library is joining the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide for Library Card Sign-Up Month, a time to remind parents, caregivers, and students that a library card is the first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning.

A library card opens a world of infinite possibilities through resources and services that give students the tools to succeed in school and beyond. From STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) programs to family storytimes, libraries transform lives through education.

Libraries offer free and fun educational resources and activities that bring families and communities together. Athol Public Library offers craft activities for all ages, book discussion groups, computer tutoring, audiobooks for long walks or car trips, museum and park passes to area attractions, a telescope that patrons may borrow, and more.

Libraries play an important role in the education and development of children. Studies show that children who are read to at home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.

“Our library programs serve people of all ages,” says Library Director Jean Shaughnessy. “For younger families, we offer early literacy resources such as Footsteps 2 Brilliance to help them learn to read and encourage school readiness, and for teens and older library users, we provide access to a wealth of reading material and opportunities to gather with people who share their interests.”

During the month of September, everyone is encouraged to get a library card. Any Athol resident who signs up for their first library card this September will be entered into a drawing to win a $25 gift card to the locate business of their choice, courtesy of the Friends of the Athol Public Library.  Already have a library card? Bring a friend to get their first library card and you will also be entered to win the gift card.

Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. During the month, the ALA and libraries unite in a national effort to encourage everyone to use the library. To get a library card, visit the library with a picture ID and proof of address.

The Athol Public Library is located at 568 Main St. and is open Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from  9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Tuesdays 9:30-8 p.m.; Fridays from 9:30-5:30 p.m., and Saturdays 9:30-1 p.m.
