ATHOL — Upon learning the Athol High School Class of 2020 was short on cash in their class coffers, Athol Fire Department Captain Art Shepardson approached the Athol Firefighters Local Union 1751 to make a donation to help out the class.

“We heard the class was in financial straits,” said Shepardson, “and they’ve had multiple fundraisers, but costs for the prom are outlandishly expensive and they didn’t have enough money in the class account. We were doing a cleanout of a ton of (returnable) cans at the station, and I approached the union about making a donation.” The 16 union members approved the request.

Capt. Shepardson, a 32-year-member of the fire department, and his son, Matthew, a junior at Athol High School, rolled up their sleeves and wrangled the mountain of soda cans in storage at the Fire Station, and delivered two truck loads of redeemables to the Redemption Center at the Templeton Developmental Center.

“We counted $200 worth of cans,” said Capt. Shepardson, who made the presentation of the check to members of the class recently at the high school. Generally the proceeds from the returnable cans go into the Union’s account.

The Firefighters Union Local 1751 has made donations to multiple other causes over the years, including high school scholarships, and recently, the donation of AEDs (Automated External Defibrillator) to the Chuck Stone Little League and Pop Warner Football League.
