Paki Wieland: Why I protested at Northfield pump station

I appreciate the Recorder’s coverage of our blocking of the tour bus to the Northfield Pump Station [“Protestors temporarily block tour bus,” Recorder, July 27]. My rationale for joining other protesters there last week will give further weight to our being there, which was our attempt to reach out to members of the National Hydropower Association’s Northeast Regional meeting. And why ?

The Northfield station claims to be a hydro plant, one that uses hydro power to produce energy, but fossil fuels are used for the power to pump the water to the reservoir, which is hardly hydro, so I wanted us to expose to the National Hydropower Association the reality that this energy producer is not clean hydro power.

My biggest concern is how Northfield kills fish and other life on and in the river, but my primary issue for the National Hydropower Association is that the Northfield Pump Station does not belong.
