Christa Chevalier: Dissatisfied with first experience at new library

As I read today’s column “Celebrating us and our new library” [Recorder, July 31], I must say how disheartened I am to not be able to share in these feelings of celebration and accomplishment in our new library.
I voted for the building of the library and have read many newspaper articles about the progression. My family and I have looked forward to opening day. My young children have asked about the building and when they would be allowed into it. We love libraries and make regular use of many of the local libraries.
Unfortunately, our first time in our hometown’s new library was uncomfortable and less than enjoyable. The children’s room is a place unwelcoming to children or families. It looks pretty; it appears to be a space made for children. Unfortunately, the children’s room staff seem to be more concerned with the speed at which a child walks than whether a young child is learning to love books. The volume of children’s excitement must be quiet. My 2- and 5-year old children experienced a space built for children that made them as uncomfortable as a doctor’s office waiting area.
I hope this culture and space can change. I hope the children’s room can be a safe and enjoyable space for all.
Let parents be the parents. Let my children enjoy their love for books, and trust that as their mother, I will help guide their behavior if needed. If a child needs redirection, maybe approach the parent instead of yelling at the child first. I am more than willing to make sure they will have “walking feet and indoor voices, sit on furniture and put toys away” as per the posted Green light-Red light system.
Maybe you could ask to give children a tour of the space, or introduce them to new books. Try to build a relationship with the local children.
