UMass women’s basketball wins FIU Thanksgiving Classic

Add another trophy to the case for the University of Massachusetts women’s basketball team.

Sam Breen scored 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds Sunday as the Minutewomen defeated Florida International 95-78 in the championship game of the FIU Thanksgiving Classic in Miami. Sydney Taylor added 25 points and eight rebounds to help UMass (6-1) to its fifth consecutive victory.

Destiney Philoxy contributed 18 points and eight assists, while Ber’Nyah Mayo and Angelique Ngalakulondi added 11 an d 10 points, respectively.

The Minutewomen started fast, leading 27-9 after one quarter. FIU controlled the second quarter but still trailed 40-36 at the half. UMass picked up the intensity in the second half to pull away for a comfortable victory, never trailing in the game.

The Minutewomen shot 58.1 percent from the field (36 for 62) and outrebounded FIU 40-38. Taylor shot 5 for 10 from 3-point range as the Minutewomen shot 47.6 percent from deep as a team.

UMass hosts Yale on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Mullins Center in Amherst. NESN-Plus will televise the contest.
