The second-ranked UMass hockey team bounced back from a loss in a big way on Saturday.

The Minutemen, led by Marc Del Gaizo’s four-point effort, routed American International, 6-1, at the MassMutual Center in Springfield.

The Minutemen were coming off a 2-1 loss to UMass Lowell on Friday in their first game back from the winter break.

“I thought we were outstanding (Saturday) — the whole game, our compete level, our game plan,” UMass head coach Greg Carvel said. “I was very fearful coming in here, AIC has played very well this year. I watched them on tape — a very offensive-minded team. I’ve said this before, I think they’re a very similar team to what we are, a team that likes to be offensive and creative and do a lot in the offensive zone. Our game plan was to own the puck in the offensive zone so they couldn’t own it in our zone and I thought we did that in spades tonight.”

UMass got at least one point from 11 skaters.

George Mika gave the Minutemen a 1-0 in the first period, backhanding a centering pass from Kurt Keats into the top-right corner of the net at the 5:51 mark. Del Gaizo earned an assist on the play.

Anthony Del Gaizo made it 2-0 at 13:29 with assists from Bobby Trivigno and Marc Del Gaizo.

Mitchell Chaffee netted his 12th of the season to give UMass a 3-0 lead in the second period. Jake Gaudet had an assist, as did Marc Del Gaizo for his third straight point.

AIC answered, but the Minutemen (15-3-0) put the Yellow Jackets (8-9-1) away.

Marc Del Gaizo’s four straight point came on a power-play goal. John Leonard and Chaffee had assists on the play.

Cale Makar and Philip Lagunov assisted Jacob Pritchard, who gave UMass a 5-1 lead in the third.

Leonard capped the night with a goal on assists from Lagunov and Pritchard.

Matt Murray finished with 20 saves for UMass, which opens a two-game homestand with Vermont, Friday night at the Mullins Center.
