Sixty minutes weren’t enough for the UMass and Vermont hockey teams on Friday night.

The visiting Minutemen trailed into the third period before tying the game on a Jack Musa goal, and the sides skated into overtime after neither team found a winner the rest of the way.

The three-on-three extra session saw 10th-ranked UMass with much of the possession, but Ryan Miotto scored the game-winning tally with 2:13 remaining and the host Catamounts snagged a 2-1 win at Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington, Vt.

Vermont took a 1-0 lead late in the second period. Nick Ahern broke a scoreless game with a power-play goal with 2:13 remaining.

It stayed that way until midway through the third. Musa netted the equalizer with assists from Dans Locmelis and Elliott McDermott, making it a 1-1 game with 11:37 to go.

UMass goalie Michael Hrabal made 27 saves on the night, while UVM goalie Gabe Carriere turned away 32 of the 33 shots he saw.

The Minutemen (9-4-1) are off until next Friday night, when they host Alaska-Anchorage for a weekend set of games at the Mullins Center.

Women’s basketball

Yale 70, UMass 62 — A battle of two teams in need of a win saw the host Bulldogs lock down the Minutewomen late to secure a 70-62 non-conference victory on Friday night in New Haven, Conn.

UMass fell to 1-8 on the season while Yale improved to 2-6.

The Minutewomen got as close as 57-55 when Lilly Ferguson sank a pair of free throws with 3 minutes, 59 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. But Yale ripped off five straight points, highlighted by a 3-pointer by Kiley Capstraw with 2:13 left, and pulled away at the free throw line in the waning minutes.

UMass went without a field goal for over four minutes down the stretch, though it finished the night shooting 49-percent from the floor.

Yale dominated the boards, finishing with a 36-21 rebounding edge – the Bulldogs notched 13 offensive rebounds. The hosts finished 7-for-19 from three-point range, and 15-for-19 from the free throw line.

Yale led 34-23 at halftime, and the lead grew to 39-27 with 7:27 left in the third quarter before UMass answered. The Minutewomen closed the third on a 19-9 run, pulling within 48-46 entering the fourth.  Lilly Taulelei’s layup tied the game early in the fourth, but Yale ripped off a quick 5-0 run and never trailed the rest of the night.

Chinenye Odenigbo scored her first points in a UMass uniform, finishing with six on the night. Taulelei was the lone Minutewoman to finish in double figures (13 points), though seven players finished with six or more points in a balanced outing across the board.

Yale led 12-11 after one quarter.

Next up for UMass is a road trip Wednesday to play Boston College.
