Dear PC Doctor:

Is it bad to let my cell phone battery run down to zero? What’s the best way to charge my phone for longest battery life?

Thanks,

Jeannie

Dear Jeannie:

Cell phone batteries do wear out over time. Charging them wisely can help them last a little longer. (They typically last between 500 and 1,000 charging cycles.)

Most experts recommend strategic battery charging. Never let it get all the way to zero, and don’t charge it above 85 percent. Don’t leave your device plugged in if the battery hits 100 percent charged. For the long-term health of your phone battery, it’s best to try to keep your phone charged between 25 and 85 percent. It sounds wrong, but charging your phone all the way up to 100 percent every time will wear it out faster. It’s also a good idea to turn off your phone (or at least not use it for battery intensive activities like gaming or watching video) while charging.

I hope this helps!

Until next time,

Happy computing!
