ATHOL — The Athol Public Library will welcome local artist Donna Peck, Wednesday, Oct. 9, at a reception in the library conference room from 5-7 p.m. Her works are on view through Oct. 31 in the library. All are welcome.

Peck lives in Massachusetts with her husband, Tom. She enjoys traveling, photography, painting in watercolors and acrylics and drawing in colored pencil. Her seven grandchildren serve as her models.

In 1969, she returned from Viet Nam where she was an Army nurse during the war. Later, as she went to college on the GI Bill, she fell in love with art and painting and took every available course on the subject. She found great healing and comfort from art and has been doing it since. Peck studied under well-known artists Jan Kunz, Carlton Plummer, Joseph Fettingis and Phyllis Bergeron Bagley, and has become an accomplished watercolorist.

Peck was invited to be part of an international art painting week in France and is a juried member of the North Shore Art Association and the Nantucket Art Association Locally, she has won numerous awards and ribbons through the shows of the Leominster Art Association and is a member of the Circle of Artists in Westminster.

“Art slows me down. I have to study a face, flower, or landscape in order to render it,” states Peck, “Before you know it, I am a child again looking at my surroundings in a fresh way and lost in the creative process — relishing the way light transforms a leaf or loaf of bread. Brush in hand, I am on vacation right at my kitchen table. I don’t just want to paint, I have to — it is like breathing and a gift from God. He gets all the glory.”

The exhibit, in the library conference room, is on view now through Oct. 31.

Free and open to the public.
