Cyhowski pitches Greenfield to lead in Ripken final

Hugh Cyhowski’s seven strikeout performance helped the Greenfield 12U Cal Ripken team defeat Frontier, 8-0, on Friday night at Lunt Field in Greenfield.

Cyhowski pitched into the fifth inning to pick up the win. 

Ethan Quinn and Braden Tsipenyuk pitched scoreless relief, combining for four strikeouts for Greenfield.

“Our pitching was the story,” Greenfield coach Aaron Campbell said. 

The win gives Greenfield the 1-0 lead in best-of-three District series.  Game 2 is on Sunday at 4:30 in Sunderland. 

Greenfield scored five runs in the fifth to pull away from Frontier. 

“Our kids started tentatively,” Campbell said. “But once the game started flowing we got comfortable and started hitting.

Brayden Thayer went 3-for-3 with two runs scored for Greenfield. Quinn had two hits including a double with two RBI.

Deven Dubie went 2-for-2, with Cam Burnett adding a hit with two RBIs.

Cyhowski’s notched two RBI to help his own cause on the mound. Jacob Brook added a base-knock with a run scored.

Frontier got a quality start out of Owen Babb who gave up three runs in four innings with four strikeouts. 

Brandon Loos went 2-for-2 for Frontier, with Riley McDonald adding another hit. 

10U

The Frontier Cal Ripken team lost to Hadley, 18-13, in Whately on Friday night. 

Frontier faced a 12-run deficit in the third inning but battled back to close the gap with 11 runs combined in the fourth and fifth innings.  

The comeback fell short for Frontier. 

Shawn Baumann had three hits with three runs scored and two RBI.

Urijah Ojeda had two hits with four RBI including a big three RBI double in the fifth.

Henry Drinker knocked in three runs for Frontier, while Joey Hutkoski added two hits with two RBI.   
Senior Legion 

Greenfield Post 81 beat Rochester, 8-0, at the 44th Annual Gubby Underwood Tournament In Keene N.H., on Friday night.

Joel Peabody pitched five innings for Post 81 (3-1) in the win. Peabody struck out eight and gave up eight hits.

Corbin Blight, Connor Waitkus, and Kiernan Freeman all had two hits for Post 81.

Freeman just missed a dinger in right field. After a home run trot, the umpire found the ball stuck to the top of the fence, sending Freeman back to second.

Junior Legion

Greenfield Post 81 came back from Longmeadow with a 12-6 win. 

Brody Baird pitched five innings for Post 81 with 11 strikeouts. Nate Sciandra came in for two innings and fanned five hitters.  

Sciandra had a hit with two RBI at the plate.

Mike Bassett went 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Nick Bresciano added a two-bagger for Post 81.

MJ Paulin had a hit with an RBI while Nick Crocker had a hit with two runs scored.  

Post 81 (2-2) plays at Agawam on Tuesday

Mickey Mantle

Ben Zaranek tossed a no-hitter for Alber’s Hearing Services in a 7-1 win over Northampton at Headmaster’s Field in Deerfield on Friday.

Zaranek fanned seven hitters in the no-no.

Kevin Baumann led the offense with three RBI. 

Tom Alber (RBI), Tynan Creagh (RBI), Kyle Barnes and Maxwell Edwards all had hits for Alber’s.

Ben Martino, Alex Kirkendall knocked in a run each. 

The West County Warriors used a seven run second inning to beat South Hadley, 13-2, in five innings in Buckland on Friday. 

Jared Jacobs pitched three innings of one-hit baseball to pick up the win on the mound. Jacobs had four strikeouts.

Matt Pollen pitched the fourth inning and got out of a bases loaded jam with three straight strikeouts. Anthony Moffatt pitched the fifth, fanning two hitters. 

Rueben Bassett led the offense, going 3-for-3 with four RBI and two triples. Liam O’Donnell also went 3-for-3 for the Warriors.

Pollen, Moffatt (two RBI), Tyler Dubreuil and Cam Lococo had multiple hits for West County. 

The Warriors (3-1) play a doubleheader at Bullens Field in Westfield on Saturday.

Adult softball

Greenfield Co-Rec

Beck’s Automotive’s Adam Bastarache clobbered a three run homer in the second inning to lead the offense in a 19-4 win over the Hangar at Green River on Friday. 

Bastarache added a double for Beck’s (8-1).

Kelly Sadler picked up the win in the circle and added three hits. 

Jenessa Murphy had two hits with a triple, while Kelsey Malloy added two hits including a double.  

For the Hangar, Josh Johnson and Vinny Natale both had two hits.  

Golf

Northfield

Jim Carew nailed a hole-in-one at Northfield Golf Club on Friday.

Carew used an nine-iron off the white tee to cup the ace on the seventh hole. The seventh hole at Northfield is a par three stretching 131 yards.  

It was Carew’s first career hole-in-one.  Paul Barnard, Michael Leclaire, and Bob Wilson witnessed the shot.  

CCG

Todd Ezold shot a 65 at the 2019 Senior Open to take down the overall championship at the Country Club of Greenfield on Friday.

Jim Ruschioni placed second (69) ahead of Carter Fasick, who shot a 70.

Paul Barnard, Dennis Rabtor and Forbes Byron all shot a 65 to finish tied for first in the overall net championship.

David Kennedy shot a 74, finishing first for seniors (gross).

Adam Lussier’s 68 gave him first place in the senior net category.

The super seniors saw Gary Mattesen finish first with a 71, ahead of Bob Linn who shot a 72.

The super senior net category had Joe Wisneski (67) edge Hugh Barber, Terry Sinclair  and Pat Grogan (68). 

Mike Korpita shot a 76, finishing first among the ultra seniors (gross). 

Chip Vignone and Andy Piecuch tied for first with a 68 (ultra senior net).

Running

The Northfield Summer Road Race Series will begin its eighth season of races on Thursday.

The weekly 3.3 mile race begins and ends at 105 Main Street in Northfield every Thursday through the summer.

Registration begins at 6 pm and the race starts at 6:30 p.m.

Entry fee is $4 with a maximum of $10 per family.

Walkers are welcome and may start the course early or choose to walk a shorter route. Every entry gets a prize.
