ORANGE — According to a press release from the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, James Gonzalez, 29, of Orange was arraigned in Orange District Court Tuesday on multiple charges in connection with an incident in Orange Monday in which an elderly woman was stabbed.
Due to questions related to the defendant’s competency, and concerns over COVID, the defendant was not physically present during today’s hearing.
He was ordered committed to Bridgewater State Hospital for further evaluations regarding competency and criminal responsibility. The defendant is held without right to bail and the Commonwealth has reserved the right to argue for 58A detention when he is returned to court.
The defendant is charged with: A&B With Dangerous Weapon +60, Armed Assault to Murder +60, A&B Dangerous Weapon Causing Serious Bodily Injury, A&B +60, and A&B with Dangerous Weapon.
The next court date is Feb. 12, for status.
