Civil Air Patrol Pilot aces check ride

PETERSHAM — Civil Air Patrol Pilot Lt. Morgan Hall of Petersham is now qualified to fly orientation flights for the program’s cadet members. Hall, who became a member of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) one year ago and completed his official check ride on Dec. 27.

Though the squadron had rated pilots in the past, Hall is the first of potentially five licensed pilots who are pursuing the rating to fly cadets in the future. Pilots take cadets on orientation flights, popularly known as O-Flights, where a detailed syllabus focusing on basic maneuvers, aircraft instruments, weather, and aircraft maintenance and pre-flight checks is introduced.

“Getting cadets in the air is one of our highest priorities,” said Major Steve Lauzon, the squadron’s commander. “Lieutenant Hall’s qualification will allow us to schedule sorties out of the Northampton Airport without having to coordinate with other Mass Wing units.”

Lauzon explained that up until now orientation flights had to be coordinated with pilots from other squadrons, some more than an hour away.

Lieutenant Hall is also now rated to fly one of the organization’s most sophisticated aircraft, the Cessna 172 equipped with the Garmin G-1000 “glass” instrument panel. Where there were once gauges and dials there are now two LCD panels offering the pilot far more situational awareness in areas such as navigation, weather, nearby traffic, and other data such as engine performance.
