With the Division 3 playoffs starting for the Mahar volleyball team on Friday night, the Senators will focus on their game and not so much who is on the other side of the net.

“We are focused on defense,” Mahar’s Carissa Johnson said. “Getting the ball to Aria to set up our hitters.”

Johnson is referring to setter Aria Flematti, who went over 1,000 assists for her career for the Senators this season.

Sixth-seeded Mahar (15-5) will host No. 11 Southwick (12-7) at home at 6:30.

“I don’t really know a lot about them,” Mahar coach Sarah Woodward said. “Typically, they are not as strong as other teams and play in a weaker league. But they are well coached.”

Seniors Jordyn Berry and Ava Santana handle most of the hitting for the Senators. Santana has a case of strep throat and missed practice and school on Thursday.

The plan is for Santana to be available for Friday night. In accordance with school rules, she would need to be school for at least a half day to be able to play in the match.

Last season, the Senators lost in the first round to Mount Greylock.

“I think that this year we are a lot stronger,” Johnson said. “We are better as a team, and more connected and ready to play.”

If Mahar advances they would head to the Berkshires for another match against No. 3 Mount Greylock on Monday.

Lauren Henne is Mahar’s top defender.

Allie Methe has 101 aces for the Rams on the season. Jen Motsko leads Southwick with 65 kills while Kaitlyn Haselton is tops with 125 assists.
