Local roundup: Frontier volleyball splits opening pair on the Cape with Nauset & Dennis-Yarmouth

A weekend on Cape Cod saw the Frontier Regional girls volleyball team open its 2024 season with a pair of eastern Mass. opponents. The Redhawks went 1-1 on Sunday, sweeping Nauset 3-0 while dropping a 3-1 decision to Dennis-Yarmouth.

“I think we smoothed out some things this weekend and we’re ready to get back in the gym this week and keep working hard,” Frontier coach Courtney Parent said. “I’m proud of the girls for fighting hard this weekend. We had a mostly new lineup from last year out there and I’m really excited to see what they can do this season.”

Abigail Hernandez powered down 11 kills to the Redhawks’ 25-15, 25-13, 27-25 sweep over Nauset. Greta Hale followed with six kills, and Olivia Machon added five in a balanced offensive attack.

Cadence Martin (14 assists) and Parrish Stilla (11) combined on a solid outing from the setter positions, while Hannah Davis (six digs), Hernandez (five) and Sophia Pinardi (five) guided the defensive effort.

Frontier opened with a 25-19, 15-25, 25-20, 25-13 loss to Dennis-Yarmouth. Hernandez put down 10 kills to pace the offense, and Machon scooped up 11 digs.

The Hawks will take to the road for a match at Westfield on Wednesday.

Franklin County Bulldogs

Bryce Zraunig carried the ball five times for 86 yards and two touchdowns, helping the Franklin County Bulldogs to a 14-6 win over Ware in a Suburban Amateur Football League Senior Division contest on Sunday.

Jacob Wilder added five carries for 59 yards, while JJ Bones hauled in four catches for 25 yards and a spectacular one-handed grab to seal the win. Defensively, the Bulldogs were led by Taygen Daiganult with four tackles, while Zraunig added a sack for a safety. Xavier Woodard added a strip sack.

■ In Junior Division action, the Bulldogs rode the legs of Jackson Puchalski (eight carries, 144 yards, 3 TDs) to snag a 20-7 win on the road at Ware.

Puchalski scored touchdowns of 68, 40 and 10 yards, while Collin Winslow also ripped off 37 yards on the ground. The defense was led by Wes Darling with (seven tackles, five for loss), Liam Gould (six tackles, one for loss), Declan Thompson (four tackles) and Colton Rider (forced fumble, fumble recovery).

The Bulldogs return for their home opener at Vets Field on Sunday against Ludlow. 

Frontier Youth Football

Caden Washburn threw five touchdowns passes and over 200 yards through the air, helping Frontier to a 40-0 win over Ludlow in a SAFL Senior Division contest over the weekend.

Riggins Kopcza was on the receiving end of three touchdowns, while also recording two interceptions and a fumble recovery on defense. Kimmie Taylor added toughness with a rushing touchdown, while Chase Greene and Harry Doody also had a receiving touchdown. The defense was led by a solid defensive front with seven tackles each from Greene and Prestyn Petrizzi-Richmond.

■ In Junior Division action, Frontier also pitched a shutout against Ludlow via a 15-0 victory.

The Redhawks took an early lead with a toss to Jack Carney to the outside for a 6-0 lead, followed by a Teague Washburn extra point. In the second half, Washburn once again hit Carney on the side for another TD. Aidan Pitchko caught the 2-point conversion to seal the win for the Redhawks.

The Hawks defense had a strong day, with Brody Bailey and Aiden Stone fighting their way through the line to each make a sack. Rylie Rappe made several big plans including a big tackle in the backfield resulting in a loss of yards.

■ The Frontier Peewee team kicked off their season with an impressive victory, securing a 36-19 win over the weekend.

The game saw strong performances from several players. Ryan Washburn, Kyrie Petrizzi-Richmond, Lane Kicza, Barrett Kicza and Johnny Stanisewski all notched TDs for Frontier. First year starters Carson Clark, Jack Mason and Cal Rose held the line, led by returning starter Logan Elias.

Golf

CFC Open Mixed Scotch

Mark Waskiewicz and Valerie Esquer teamed for a 77, earning low gross honors at Crumpin-Fox Club’s Open Mixed Scotch event on Sunday in Bernardston.

Carl Hoynoski and Jodi Hoynoski had the low net score of 69.

CCG Labor Day Round Robin

Keegan Downie and Dan Gavin amassed 35.5 points, earning the top spot in Flight One at the Country Club of Greenfield’s Labor Day Round Robin on Sunday.

David Blanchette and Gary Blanchette were second with 28 points.

In Flight Two action, Roy Emerson and Cliff Porter scored 27.5 points to take first place, followed by Phil Reilley and John Varner (26.5).

In Flight Three, Jay Milkey and Chris Ferro (29.5) took top honors, followed by Joe Viadero and Ernie Patnode (25.5).

Nancy Donoghue and Nancy Robie scored 35 points to win the Women’s Flight, with Jess Lapachinski and Corrine Sysun taking second place (29 points).

CCG Friday Night Mixed League

The quartet of John Varner, Teresa Varner, Terry Boyce and Patrick Varner shot 75 to take low gross honors at CCG’s Friday Night Mixer.

Low net score went to the team of Elizabeth Archer, Mike Archer, Karen Duclos and Michael Duclos (65).

Timmons-Messer League

Rick Stempel and Andy Sena shot 36 to secure low gross honors at the Timmons-Messer League on Wednesday at Northfield Golf Club.

Sena was the match medalist with a 37. Jeff Roberts and Walt Sanieski won a match of cards to finish second at 38. Low net went to Fran O’Neil and Jeff Seymour (27), just ahead of second place Elton Kinsman and Ed Reagey (28).

Closest to the pin winners were Roberts on No. 6 (3 feet, 8 inches) and Ed Marvell on No. 7 (9-5).
