Local basketball: Mahar Middle School boys cut down Athol

The Mahar middle school boys basketball team outlasted Athol, 48-35, Friday in Orange.

Gavin Sullivan scored 16 points with Connor Sluder adding 10 for the undefeated Senators.

Will Barnes held Athol’s Aedan Erickson to six points to help pace the defense for Mahar.

Athol 49, Mohawk 28 — After a sluggish first half the Red Raiders boys team pulled away from the Warriors at home on Thursday.

Athol led only 21-16 at the intermission.

Angel Castillo scored 15 points for the Red Raiders, with Erickson adding nine.

Mahar 35, Athol 6 — The Mahar middle school girls team’s press was too much for the Red Raiders in a win in Orange on Friday.

Jenna Bonenfant scored six points with five rebounds and two blocks for the Red Raiders.

Alivia Patch had 11 points with 12 rebounds for the Senators with Kendrah Doane scoring nine points with 10 rebounds and six steals.

Cassidy Boutell led the Senators’ defense with eight steals.

Frontier 49, Athol 16 — Kylah Blundon and Bonenfant scored four points each, but the Red Raiders (4-3) lost at home to the Red Hawks on Monday.

Athol 21, Mohawk 9 — After a long hiatus due to the holidays, the Red Raiders beat the Warriors at home on Thursday.

Bonenfant scored eight points with four rebounds and two steals.

Sammy Mailloux led the defense with four steals and Brooke Hopkins took care of the class with six rebounds and added three blocked shots.

Junior Varsity

Mahar 48, Pioneer 46 — Charlie Anderson drew a foul and connected on both free throws in the final seconds to give the Mahar boys basketball team a win at home on Monday.

Anderson led the Senators with 19 points with Ayden Santana adding 11.

Frontier 80, Athol 29 — The Red Raiders struggled against the Red Hawks in a loss in South Deerfield on Monday.

Vincent Gordon (seven points) and Casey Mason (six points) led Athol in scoring.
