Local basketball: Mahar JV beats Hopkins Academy

Aydan Sevigny’s 15 points helped the Mahar boys junior varsity basketball team beat Hopkins Academy, 55-33, Thursday in Orange.

Ayden Santana (17 rebounds) and Luke Melanson (13 rebounds) controlled the glass for the Senators.

Santana (14 points), Charlie Anderson (11 points) reached double-figures.

Anderson led the defense with five steals.

Greenfield 50, Athol 42 — The Green Wave pulled away late in the fourth quarter in a home loss for the Red Raiders.

Vincent Gordon scored 13 points for Athol.

Jack Bonenfant chipped in with 10 points.

Mahar 44, Greenfield 18 — The Senators girls junior varsity team cruised past the Green Wave at home on Tuesday night.

Makayla Mathurin led all scorers with 11 points for Mahar.

Natalie Belloli and Sienna Moore both added nine points, with Abby Henne contributing eight.

Shaylee Dennis had a season-high five points.

Middle School girls

Mahar 19, Hopkins Academy 11 — Balanced scoring and defense gave the Senators a win on the road on Thursday.

Deanna Smith, Sophia Woods and Alexis Packard scored four points each for Mahar.

Mahar 35, Frontier 23 — Alivia Patch scored nine points with 12 rebounds as the Senators handed the Red Hawks their first loss of the season at home on Wednesday.

Cassidy Boutell had seven points with six steals for the Senators.

Kendrah Doane and Brooklyn Kennedy each added six points for Mahar.

Greenfield 40, Athol 24 — The defense was sound, but the Red Raiders couldn’t finish opportunities inside in a loss on the road on Thursday.

Kylah Blundon and Jenna Bonenfant scored eight points each for Athol.

Athol 34, Mohawk 7 — Abby Willhite, Lilly Rathburn and Leann L’Heureux led a solid defensive effort in a home win for the Red Raiders in Buckland on Wednesday.

Bonenfant scored 10 points for Athol (5-3).

Lizzy Mailloux and Abby Lutz each had six points.

Middle School boys

Athol 40, Mohawk 19 — The Red Raiders won on the road behind the return of Lucas Saisa and his 12 points on Wednesday.

“It was nice to get Lucas back,” Athol coach Nathan Fisher said. “He really completes this group.”

Saisa had been out with an illness. Aedan Erickson added seven points for the Red Raiders.

Mahar 47, Hopkins Academy 23 — The Senators returned to form with a win over the Golden Hawks in Hadley on Thursday.

Will Barnes and David Johnson scored eight points each for the Senators (6-1).

Frontier 36, Mahar 26 — The Red Hawks handed the Senators their first loss of the season at home on Wednesday.

Connor Sluder had 10 points in the loss.
